چکیده

The enhancement and detection of elongated structures in noisy image data is relevant for many biomedical applications. To handle complex crossing structures in 2D images, 2D orientation scores U : R × S → R were introduced, which already showed their use in a variety of applications. Here we extend this work to 3D orientation scores U : R × S → R. First, we construct the orientation score from a given dataset, which is achieved by an invertible coherent state type of transform. For this transformation we introduce 3D versions of the 2D cake-wavelets, which are complex wavelets that can simultaneously detect oriented structures and oriented edges. For efficient implementation of the different steps in the wavelet creation we use a spherical harmonic transform. Finally, we show some first results of practical applications of 3D orientation scores.

Design and Processing of Invertible Orientation Scores of 3D Images for Enhancement of Complex Vasculature

The enhancement and detection of elongated structures in noisy image data is relevant for many biomedical imaging applications. To handle complex crossing structures in 2D images, 2D orientation scores U : R×S → C were introduced, which already showed their use in a variety of applications. Here we extend this work to 3D orientation scores U : R × S → C. First, we construct the orientation scor...

Left-invariant Parabolic Evolutions on Se(2) and Contour Enhancement via Invertible Orientation Scores Part Ii: Nonlinear Left-invariant Diffusions on Invertible Orientation Scores

By means of a special type of wavelet unitary transform we construct an orientation score from a grey-value image. This orientation score is a complex-valued function on the 2D Euclidean motion group SE(2) and gives us explicit information on the presence of local orientations in an image. As the transform between image and orientation score is unitary we can relate operators on images to opera...

Training of Templates for Object Recognition in Invertible Orientation Scores: Application to Optic Nerve Head Detection in Retinal Images

A new template matching scheme for the detection of objects on the basis of orientations is proposed. The matching scheme is based on correlations in the domain R o S of complex valued invertible orientation scores. In invertible orientation scores, a comprehensive overview of how an image is decomposed into local orientations is obtained. The presented approach allows for the efficient detecti...

Line Enhancement and Completion via Linear Left Invariant Scale Spaces on SE(2)

From an image we construct an invertible orientation score, which provides an overview of local orientations in an image. This orientation score is a function on the group SE(2) of both positions and orientations. It allows us to diffuse along multiple local line segments in an image. The transformation from image to orientation score amounts to convolutions with an oriented kernel rotated at m...

Vesselness via Multiple Scale Orientation Scores

The multi–scale Frangi vesselness filter is an established tool in (retinal) vascular imaging. However, it cannot properly cope with crossings or bifurcations since it only looks for elongated structures. Therefore, we disentangle crossings/bifurcations via (multiple scale) invertible orientation scores and apply vesselness filters in this domain. This new method via scale–orientation scores pe...
